Healthcare: A lifelong perspective
Healthcare has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. The healthcare field was the field of choice for many people in my family. My grandfather was a physician, my father is a physician, and one of my sisters is currently in a family practice residency at UNC-Chapel Hill. While I didn't pursue a career in medicine, healthcare remains an important part of my life, as it is the focus of our publishing business. One of the major influences in my business life has been my father, a dedicated physician who worked hard and treated people well. In a way he was lucky, because his ambitions for taking care of patients were a perfect match for the conditions that existed when he began practicing medicine in the late-1960s. Armed with credentials in general surgery, colon and rectal surgery, and internal medicine, he opened his own practice in Syracuse, N.Y., in 1968. The main driver in every business decision he made was the well-being of his patients, and they loved him for it. The schedule he kept in those days was incredible. He was up at 6 a.m. and out the door by 6:30 a.m., rarely arriving home before 7 p.m. Sandwiched in between rounds at the hospital, office hours, his surgery schedule and late-night runs to the hospital for emergencies, he was an active dad to seven children, a successful investor, an avid tennis player and golfer, a sailor and a piano player. As you can well imagine, he possessed an incredible amount of energy. I believe one of the keys to his success, especially with the schedule he kept, was his ability to relax. He had an easy time leaving the office behind him. An hour at the piano or playing tennis was an effective way for him to release the frustrations of his day. It kept him happy, focused and relaxed even though he was moving at a fast pace. He is a fantastic example of the physician we hope to reach with Georgia Physician: active, passionate and engaged about business and leisure. Today, the conditions in the business of healthcare are much different from when my father was at the peak of his career. He didn't have to deal with the skyrocketing malpractice premiums, managed care, insurance companies that question everything and government regulations, like many of you. It is one of the reasons we believe the time is right for Georgia Physician to enter your lives. We hope it will be the place you look to for information that can keep you ahead of these issues as well as in touch with the things you would like to pursue in your free time. |
