Salute!
The world is full of problems. People are treated unfairly or, sometimes, are just born into unfortunate and undesirable circumstances. Some folks just have bad luck and cannot win, no matter how hard they try. Challenges are alive and well in the world of medicine, too. People make mistakes that cost lives. Illnesses aren't found early enough or are misdiagnosed. Insurance woes cause physicians to struggle with whether to keep their practices open, or give up and give in. Some physicians have a career on which to fall back. Some start writing books. Others further hone an existing talent. Some just retire and hope for the best. The state of medicine today can appear quite bleak when painted in this light. Thankfully, we have medical breakthroughs, the fine art of care giving and expertise exercised daily by thousands of physicians to remind us all of how lucky we are to be Georgia citizens. We have a forward-thinking governor who truly "gets it," and you simply cannot put a price tag on the importance of that. Gov. Sonny Perdue gives healthcare in Georgia a good name, which is no easy task (see article on p. 16). I already knew he was a well-liked governor, but through our interview with him, I learned he is as sharp as a tack and understands the direction our state needs to take regarding medicine. I wrote in the last issue of Georgia Physician about the talents possessed by so many physicians in Georgia. The feedback I received further validated my belief, as I heard from sculptors, authors, craftsmen and medical missionaries. Several of my MDSI colleagues and I recently visited a gallery where Dr. Gary Bodner showed his latest pieces. I was impressed, to say the least. Hats off to the researchers, care givers and brilliant minds who keep Georgia's mark on the proverbial medical map. We salute you. |
